“Notice: By vic.cap.20.s.75. any person not fastening this gate after having passed through is liable to a penalty of forty shillings.”
I spotted this old sign in Buckinghamshire. The shilling was a unit of pre-decimal currency discontinued in 1971.
Daily Photo Gallery is somewhere for me to share photos of places with a story to tell and anything unusual I discover.

Hi, great photo.
There is a similar sign on a gate around Ashopton, near Ladybower, Derbyshire - see link to photo I took - https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JoTip7IHFy0/TZIBXOa4zOI/AAAAAAAAGUQ/zYkHQ7PlpbU/s912/IMG_2187.JPG

I've seen the same and similar signs being auctioned. They seem to be from railways, as far as I can tell.
Oooh, 40 shillings - harsh! I'd love to see them trying to extract that from someone today. Then again, are actual shillings worth anything these days?
